Trust me you only think that because you live in Ky, in the real world women are still attracted to money, ferrari's and men with power somehow only steve erkel gets the girl because that is tv and this is the real world.
    Did Everquest teach you that?

He is, but he lives in Kentucky too so I'm not quite sure where he was going with that statement.

Besides, Kentucky has lots of geeky things to call its own. Nascar, car modding, shooting stuff whilst drinking, etc. Hillbilly geeks r0x0r.

Arizona has all of that and more. I'm pretty sure hillbillyism ignores political borders (among other things).

I am a little disheartened over the articles flippant use of the words geek and nerd - as if they're interchangeable!

I agree to a certain extent, the authors use of certain "celebs" definitely draws light of the scenewhoresc factor.

I'd say it's more the latest "trend". It's not that geeks are becoming more attractive, it's that dating a geek is the latest fad. Don't expect "geek dating" to be coming to a High School near you - Not Gunna Happen.

Your absolutely correct, except for the fact that you fail to understand that many geeks now fit the above criteria. Also, it's really only a certain segment of the female population that does that (or can do that).

That brings to light another very interesting point. What makes something "geeky"? Seriously, think about it and try to define it.

It's the media, they tend to either tie everything together with one word or use multiple words as if they were one in the same. Maybe someday they'll get it right.

Lastest trend maybe, but then again maybe it's a trend that has just resurfaced. I thought geeks were always attractive, oh wait I am a geek nevermind.

As HighWiz said many geeks now fit into that criteria, and if you turn the tables many males now also fit into that mass. Agreed, it is only a select group of the female population that does that or would/can do that.

Thank you HighWiz, you gave me a great idea. Let the fun and research begin.

This is a kind of information leakage that allows us to tell that the writer is an outsider.

Don't expect "geek dating" to be coming to a High School near you - Not Gunna Happen.
I agree with this. There is too much peer pressure in school, and many high school kids are slaves to corporate advertising and marketing; they are sheeple.

Also, it's really only a certain segment of the female population that does that (or can do that).
That comes from motivation. Many people value what other people think more than what they themselves feel. Another example of sheeple-- people choosing to do what is "acceptable" instead of what really lights their passion.

What makes something "geeky"? Seriously, think about it and try to define it.
Conventional definition: a person that performs strange acts in front of crowds for money/living. e.g. A Circus geek may bite the heads off of live chickens.
If we ignore the word "crowd" then many people in tech could be considered "geeks" at the moment, since techie stuff is still "strange" to many people.

Of course, but you have been collecting a lot of points since you have been here. When are you going to start spending them?

This is too true, at my school people think they're diversifying themselves by dressing like a goth, punk, wigger, prep, redneck, etc... (no geeks besides me and my friends), the problem is kids sometimes misinterpret the saying "be yourself" for "if you act like someone else because that person different then in turn you'll be different".

I always saw "geeky" as a term used to describe something a person does that is beyond the norm, out of the interests of most people, something they are exceptionally interested in, and something that they can relate to other people with. Alot of geeks have trouble with people outside of their specific group. I would call Jesse James a car geek, because outside of cars and motorcycles the man doesn't have much else to identify himself by. We're computer geeks and we get along with each other much better because of it.

                                Google define:geek -
The sort of person who would get really excited at the prospect of using a text editor on a 900 megahertz workstation to write out the definitions of technical terms.

It would seem by that your understanding of 'geek' would apply to any highly specialized field, be it computers, medicine, electronics, or anything; as any speciaization would have a rather limited share of similar specialization amongst other people. Actually, *anything* that someone is obsessed with could be 'geeky' with that definition. (obviously tring to figure out what 'normal' isn't too easy either)

HighWiz really asked an enigmatic question, as obviously the understanding of this term is highly individual, and I doubt any two people will give the same definition.

What makes something 'geeky'? Anything one person enjoys working with, or understanding, that another doesn't understand, and has no desire to understand; thus the application of a term to make the unknown acceptable. (I hope that made some sense...)
