Re: PUBLIC-NOTICES: Forum Changes/Fixes. Any Questions?
You may noticed a new section "Home" to the left of "Forum" and "Blogs" in the navbar area at the top of each page.
The "Home" is meant to be for articles and content of importance when sites use "Home" as the default landing point for users. Right now, the default landing when visiting https://forum.defcon.org/ is the forums. We could change that, and this would cause people to see various announcements or articles in, "Home."
To create an article, sufficient access is required. This may change, but for now I have set up permissions to allow "Forum Contest/Event Leaders/Organizers", mods, goons, goon-mods, mods, and admins to promote posts to become articles and share space on the "home" section. This is an experiment, and is really only useful if we set the default landing page for visits to https://forum.defcon.org/ to be "home" but is something we can play with.
We can create multiple categories in Home for things like "Contests/Events/Social Gatherings" and limit access to that to forum leaders/organizers. We could create another for DC Groups, and another for Forum-specific content for mods, and another for general Defcon information and links to be used by another group. For now, there is just "home" and access is open to many. There is no point investing time to configure this if there is no interest in using it.
"Forum Contest/Event Leaders/Organizers" are not moderators; the CANNOT ban, unban, and are not supposed to enforce any rules. The extra controls they have are specifically for promotion of their event, and management of posts and threads in the forums that contain content for their contest or event. Just because a person runs a contest or event does not mean they immediately get the extra tools available to a person that has been reviewed by the mods (waiting period) to be trusted enough to not cause problems with their extra controls. I do not nominate any person running a contest or event unless I've met them or have a lot of experience with them as not being likely to create more work for me or other mods. (Low drama, trustworthy people are ideal.) Also, like other things we do on the forums, this is an experiment and can be eliminated at any time. So far it has helped us and people running contests or events that have this, as they don't have to bother us to manage posts and thread in the forum for their contest or event. This has been an experiment for about 5 years and is likely to continue as long as we don't have problems with it.Leave a comment:

Re: PUBLIC-NOTICES: Forum Changes/Fixes. Any Questions?
CES = Contest, Events Social-gatherings.
I do not authorize any contests, events or social gatherings, and the existence of a forum is no indication that any CES has been given a
nod for this year. I only help with the forums and where I am wanted and want to help. It is up to leaders/organizers to submit their info
to Pyr0, Nikita, or whoever can give them the resources they need to run their CES and verify it as true. Forums provided this early are means to help support leaders/organizers with space for discussion, and links to websites, twitter accounts, facebook pages and more, so attendees can know what is being planned by leaders and organizers this year. The forums will eventually conform to the decisions of people like Pyr0 and Nikita, and I will eventually be checking with them to find out which CES are known so I can close/remove any forums for remaining CES that are unknown to Defcon 20.
CES described above in the order they were announced by leaders/organizers in this thread:

Re: PUBLIC-NOTICES: Forum Changes/Fixes. Any Questions?
Thanks man :-)
Ok, the serious problems with the classic style have been worked out.
I am looking for feedback on style changes in this thread and post (link)
The thread where you are reading this post is for problems you see with the recent major upgrade not related to style problems.
The "Projects" thing is gone. Totally.
Blogs have been migrated to the new blog system and should work. Please let me know if otherwise.
You may see new options in the UserCP. If you have questions or comments, about new features or feature changes (other that style-related) plase ask those here.
Later today, I plan to roll out DC20 contest and event forums. (I spent all my time yesterday trying to diagnose some of these style problems and did not get to new forums for DC20.)Leave a comment:

Re: PUBLIC-NOTICES: Forum Changes/Fixes. Any Questions?
Update: Jeff fixed the firewall thing last night, so I've been able to edit styles since then and have been.
Sorry man, but I assme you mean, "High Contrast Dark" ?
I am guessing this because "Classic1" is broken in a specific way: css "left-padding" is 100120px for the post-icons, which screws with the display of posts within a thread AND nav-links which are lark text on dark background which needs to be resolved, and because the new, "High Contrast Light," is broken in many ways, mostly including unreadable font colors (light on light background.)
Of all these, only the "High Contrast Dark" is mostly working.
Some will ask why these are not as good as the preview discussed earlier.... the same upgrade here that broke these styles here also broke the styles on the preview server when it was upgraded.
I've not found the cause for these problems yet. they may be bugs in software, because I do not have any requests for 100120 pixel padding in the variables I alter. I am thinking this "100120pixel" count in the css loaded on pages is manufactured from something like a color #100120" or a comma delimited list of padding like 10,0,12,0 which is strpping out commas, quotes, whitespaces, and converting the resulting string to an int. I'm still looking. Sorry about the crappy style problems -- this is not how I planned the upgrade to work.Leave a comment:

Re: PUBLIC-NOTICES: Forum Changes/Fixes. Any Questions?
The upgrade has been finished, but there are still problems.
Obviously, styles have changed. I am in the process of working on the "Classic1" style to cleanup posts in threads.
A new (broken) style "High Contrast Light" has been added, but I don't yet have access to edit it. (DT is working on firewall rules to unblock what is preventing style changes from being applied.)
For now, please report any problems unrelated to style/color/font/layout to me here, so they can be investigated.Leave a comment:

Re: PUBLIC-NOTICES: Forum Changes/Fixes. Any Questions?
I have not had time to implement the high-contrast light-base as an alternate to the high-contrast dark-base. I will do that later.
Once I have it available, you all can vote on which high-contrast theme/style you want to keep. I am willing to support 2 themes: legacy and high-contrast.
Neil can provide a new default theme (if he is interested) to match the theme of the Defcon website. If he chooses to do so, then we will have at least 3 themes. If he is willing to support another theme, then we can have 4. These styles/themes are annoying during upgrades, as they can create unexpected complications or side-effects when upgrading.
I planned to get to this in October or November, but obviously, did not get around to it.Next order of business...
We have a significant upgrade to the forum software coming soon. Unlike almost all of the past upgrades and maintenance periods, this *will* have an impact on how you interface with the forums.
This weekend is when I am planning on the major upgrade.
Your feedback is welcome as we try to refine the themes I am willing to support.
Initially, there *should* be 3 themes installed by me. The "Legacy" theme, which many of you have tried is something I will try to continue to refine until we get "close enough" (for government work. ;-)
The other two themes I provide will not both exist for long. These will be "High Contrast" and you all will get to vote on which you would prefer to keep. The primary goal of the "High Contrast" is readability, NOT, "look and feel," so please vote based on only the criteria of "readability" not which one has a color-scheme that makes you feel better, or seems more hackish, or more lie Defcon.
Major Upgrade coming this weekend. Expected down-time is 2 to 4 hours. When I have more details on when this will start, I'll post that here and on a twitter feed:

Re: PUBLIC-NOTICES: Forum Changes/Fixes. Any Questions?
So far, everyone that has commented or replied to me about access to https content for *.defcon.org servers has not replied to my emails, IM, chats, and post her, or they have replied to say it is all working for them again.
Next order of business...
We have a significant upgrade to the forum software coming soon. Unlike almost all of the past upgrades and maintenance periods, this *will* have an impact on how you interface with the forums.
The new upgrade does not support the older themes, and will not import them to the new format. Any desired themes must be created manually.
We have two themes on the present Defcon Forums. The "Classic" is a throwback theme from many, many versions major forum software upgrades, kludged together with newer software to keep it working. The other is a Theme designed to better match the look and feel of the main Defcon webpage and the style it displays.
We have some controls over how we implement 2 themes, maybe 3 themes, but because the way themes are applied in the new software is significantly different in the new software, we will only be able to approximate the existing themes.
Mods are the first to provide direction and input. They will be getting a "sneak preview" of a theme to emulate "classic" and be able to provide input. Once the upgrade happens, I'll open up a thread for comments from you all as users on how to better approximate the present classic theme.
I will try to do the same with the present default, but don't expect too much; I am no artist.
Last, I was thinking of creating a new, "high-contrast" theme with simple "black" text on "white" backgrounds (or white text on black backgrounds) for easier reading. (I understand this may not feel like a Defcon theme, and it won't be any "default" but will be available as a functional choice for people that desire it.)
Expect more information on this sometime between the end of October and the middle of November.Leave a comment:
