  • Minor rule updates:

    Modofications to rules:

    2. Repetitive Topics:
"(If mods can find one that you can't, they won't be happy.)"
Changed "can't" to "didn't" (language, words, meaning.)

    5. Spamming, Power posting, and Advertising:
    Added:
Please don't use URL-shortening tools (e.g.: tinyurl) when providing links on the forums since such a tool could hide, "the true nature of the link."

    1. The ‘I’m new post’:
""Hi! I'm New" posts are covered above in Spamming, Powerposting and Advertising as "no value" posting and are not allowed."
Changed "allowed" to "tolerated"(language, words, meaning.)

Let me know if you have any questions.

I agree with this, but you may want to point out the alternative of linking relevant text to a hyperlink, as this still shows the full link when you hover, but helps eliminate the 8 million character URL's that some php-happy sites are famous for.

(And if the link is too long, or at risk for a spammy redirection, the user can always copy link and paste into a text editor before visiting it.)

Good idea, feel free to change the rules to encourage users to comply with your idea.

(Also, the initial idea to have forums users not use URL shortening tools was AlxRogans.)

The default rules for the Defcon Group subforums has been changed to match that of the forums *unless* otherwise stated in any of those forums in a sticky.

(The default was previously set to be, "social rules" of /dev/random unless otherwise posted in a sticky.)

            Changes in the Admin structure:

            Hello!

Things are getting busy in my life, and I won't have as much time to play around on the forums as much as I have. The forums do not deserve to fall into disrepair as a result of changes in my life. As a result, I'm stepping down to the #2 admin spot, and we are promoting converge to the #1 admin spot.

Converge is now your primary forum admin.

I'll still be around, but not as much. I'll be helping with scripts, system integration, upgrades (as needed) and occasional work behind the scenes.

Converge is a pretty cool guy, and is a great candidate for this new role. Additionally, he is more easy-going than me, and his posts are usually much shorter than mine, so you'll be able to read them without falling asleep. ;-) If this isn't enough, he has what other people have voted as a better sense of humor than me! :-P~~

I spoke with the #3 admin about this and he agrees with these ideas and thoughts about having converge in this new role as primary admin.

All hail converge, our new forum admin!

            -Cot

I, for one, welcome our new forum overloards.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Maybe you will get the opportunity to settle that debt at the next Sushi Con. Something tells me he will be there.

if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Damn - shame you have to wait that long. There is a lot of good Vietnamese Pho in the DC area, some of it around the area where I live. Shame it is so far away from the ShmooCon site or we could go there for dinner one evening, provided we are going to see your smiling face at ShmooCon.

Will you please invite me. I've just recently tried Pho and Embarassingly Ive started it being my new diet. I have eaten almost nothing but PHO and granola bars for almost a whole week. I'm pretty much addicted.

The forums will be down for a period of time between 5pm and 7pm Pacific for routine maintenance, unless I change my mind.

--edit: maintenance completed for the night.
--edit: maintenance window opened back up tonight 12:30am, the forums may be down until 2am Pacific
--edit: forums are back, successful upgrade to vB 3.6.4 has been made. As usual, please advise of any oddness experienced. Gracias

In addition, forums will likely be down between 11pm and 1am for maintenance .. unless plans change

--edit: change of plans. forum usage is pretty active, so I'll wait until Thursday (same time frame) for the low priority maintenance. Thursday is statistically ghost town during these part...

Ok. I am done for now, but may revisit this. For now, we have a test drive.

Last year, we closed all of the forums except for a few (like Drunken Banter where posting was allowed) and we made sure contests/events were open for reading. Most of the other forums (including fucktard hall, /dev/null and Community talk) were not available for writing, or entirely hidden.

This year, We are trying to make this transition smoother by making a container for content that should be visible during Defcon 15. Feedback is welcome.

Also, this year, I will have my laptop, and will probably check the forums Monday Night and Tuesday night, but probably not on Wednesday night.

*Maybe* (if bribed to do so) I'll log in to fix a problem during the con if one is reported along with a bribe to fix it. ;-)

"Eh" that is cool. Night-time works. Daytime works. Hey! You are the primary admin now, so you can choose a time and they can live with it! Let the power corrupt you!
