What are You Giving to Defcon?

What are You Giving to Defcon?

I know that seems like an insane question since well, its just a con, you go there, you pay your admission, you go to some talks, and drink some drinks.

If everyone came there and gave something, time, knowledge, skillz, or brought 40 water guns, a cotton candy machine....anything....can you imagine the quality of the con we could make this?

What do you do that makes Defcon not "just" another con?

During con? Almost nothing but participate in a few events-- That time is mine. ]:>

Before and after con? Absolutely nothing. ;-)

Re: What are You Giving to Defcon?

My contribution this year comes in the less tangible way of trying to make sure cool things are going on and that people know about them.

I'm not making them happen, other cool people are. Whether or not the events hold up to being cool, that depends on the folks that show up and what they make of it; hell knows I'm not socially entertaining and my skills are meak compared to a lot of the folks that show up, but I do what I can and can't wait to have a great time. No manual ascii/binary log parsing and late night code debugging this year!
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

You are leader/organizer for the Forum meet, and you've been contributing time to the ToxicBBQ, and you have that calendar of happenings. Then there is other stuff that takes place *during* the con.
These may not be tangible, but they are visible. :-)

Absolutely nothing. I am 100% taker when it comes to DEF CON. Let other people do work and give back and do things that require work, planning and preparation.

Maybe his toolbox of bloody hammers and screwdrivers is a hint that what he does to deal with unpleasant issues (meaning troubled people) isn't so much work as it is a hobby. Maybe?

Oh.. I also contribute by trying to harass Chris as much as possible.

seriously.. I bet he'd be a changed man if more people walked up to him this year and just gave him a hug.

Finnix 88.0 (my personal project, a sysadmin LiveCD) will be released on the first day of talks (friday). In fact, I just finished printing/burning a stack of CDs and creating the DEFCON Finnix FAQ. In between getting drunk and getting drunk, I'll be handing out CDs, and generally whoring out Finnix. It'll be a grand ole time.
