I agree with much that was said. The year my team won, I spent about 18 hours driving doing recon, so that when we got started the first day we had a good idea where to go. This is not a county fair, this is defcon. Its not about being fair and enjoyable, its about being clever and obsessively pursuing to your goal.
The contest will always be problematic. There are a lot of issues that have already been well stated. Maybe setting up an area and having a wifi village like the lockpick one is a good idea.
There could probably be a lot of value in setting up some kind of wireless security breakout area. I would be willing to help out. This years contest seemed to lack from not having enough information before the con.
Oh yeah, I do not compete anymore because I wanted to actually see a few things during the con.
