Last year a bunch of people did karaoke without me, and being the karaoke fiend I am this drove me a little bit nuts.

Can someone who went last year opine as to where you went and whether it ruled/sucked/etc

i say that the Guitar Hero contest should one day move to GH4 so we can do a rockband-style karaoke blasting session.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

If you're referring to the bunch that went on Sunday night, we went to this place called Ellis Island.

        http://www.ellisislandcasino.com/

It's dark and crowded, but we went after the Hofbrauhaus, so it was an absolute blast. It's a little blurry, but I seem to recall a pretty decent selection of songs. I didn't buy my own drinks, so I can't speak to the bar's service or cost. The most important part is that they do it every night.

Being that Im a native to the vegas valley, and a bit of a karaoke whore myself, Im gfamiliar with a wide array of places for such fun karaoke actionz, I would like to put on a formal karaokecon, but it seems that bascule came up with the idea sooner. There were a few defcon folk in town, and we rocked it like a tidal wave and had a lot of fun. Not really a contest but definately lots of fun and lulz to be had. If you have a wayf of contacting me (IRC, twitter suckspace etc) lemme know what you think. I also know where they have decent drink specials for those who wont get up and rock unless they have had some liquid courage.

            PLACES NOT TO GO:

            The Imperial Palace

I'm out here for a trade show. I love karaoke, and I knew they had it. I've gone before and it was okay.

I get up and do my first song so well that the bartender upgrades my drink for free. Awesome. "You did a good job" yeah thanks.

I get up and do my second song: Radiohead / Creep. The lyrics presented are for the radio edit. I sing the album version, which includes the word "fucking" three times throughout the song. The first time I say it the DJ "corrects me" whoa dude you're singing the "wrong" words. Ok, whatever.

The second time he threatens to cut me off if I do it again. As I try not to be a dick in general, I comply. Whatever. Apparently it's casino policy not to let people sing the word "fuck" in karaoke songs. So my response is: I'm never going back to the Imperial Palace ever again. (Also: WTF? They're a Japanese themed casino that doesn't have a sushi restaurant? WTF is wrong with them? They suck balls)

But I'm through with that place. I want to go somewhere I can sing TOO DRUNK TO FUCK and they don't give a shit. Which, in my experience, has been every single karaoke bar I've ever been to ever, except the Imperial Palace. This is the only time in the 5 billion times I've done karaoke I have ever been told not to sing the word "fuck" in a song. WTF is wrong with that place?

Delchi took me to Dive Bar... that place rules, although I think they may only do karaoke on mondays which wouldn't work out so well. But at least I could sing the word "fuck" there and no one would give a shit.

              Re: Hacker Karaoke

as far as dropping the F-bomb there are four places (one being the dive bar) where you can and it's all good, and some of those folks will have too drunk to fuck by the dead kennedys. Im getting psyched about rocking karaoke at defcon, again for those who have means of contacting me, rape it (my contacts I mean, not the poor little puppy with Jif you sick bastards) :)

We (Vegas 2.0) have been doing sort of karaoke-con for the past two cons. A whole bunch of us just roll out to Korean Karaoke Super Place (Karaoke 5 I think) across from UNLV. Its a lemon soju fueled adventure. This is how I ended up the first year. It ha always been a blast.

The staff has always been awesome toward us, and the cab fare to get there is cheap (which is useful with all of the aforementioned lemon soju floating around). We can definitely use more people, though. It's a private room so no worries about language (not that the staff would mind anyway).

For those that are interested, the normal order is SushiCon, then chill out at the Peppermill, followed by some good, but mostly bad, karaoke. It shouldn't be hard to track us down.

Not sure why OverDose hasn't posted here, but he's working diligently on trying to do Hacker Karaoke on-site at the Riviera. In my opinion, that would RULE. No trying to organize transportation for a bunch of people, just show up to a skybox or something and sing!

In my traditional style, I am trying to help out in a purely technical capacity as he handles the organization. Provided this all works out, I will bring a large CD+G library and a computer to play it with, along with a mixer and mics. I can print out a songbook and I'd also like to have the whole song list available online, as well as a listing of the karaoke rotations (which I will display on the projector from time to time). I will also have a vocal eliminator available, so if you have a song memorized and have an MP3 of it you can just give it to me and I will play it through a vocal eliminator for you.

If you have a Skybox you'd be willing to hold karaoke in for part of your assigned Skybox period, that would rule. I think we're set on a sound system, and hopefully set on projectors and monitors.

Awesome! I understand you both are going to be very busy but if there's anything you can do in the way of helping us locate a venue it would be much appreciated. I think we're almost set on content and equipment, the only problem that remains is where to put it.

I will ask around, no promises though. Maybe we can set you up in somewhere. I'll put it on my todo list. :-)

If this does get a venue, time etc., we can break it out into its own event forum. Bascule, are you the organizer of this if it is an event?
