    Re: Expectations at Defcon

this will be my 10th non-consecutive con.

    I don't expect:
-anyone to recognize my anti-social ass.
-to run out of alcohol on-hand.
    -the pool to be open.

    I do expect:
-to not be such an anti-social ass.
-to talk, bail, or otherwise get a friend out of some kind of trouble.
-to be told by hotel staff "you can't smoke in this area", multiple times.
    -to finally attend a TBBQ.
-to forget to pack something i don't think about throughout the year, but need it desperately for some reason at 3am on friday...

that's all i have for now.
"You have cubed asscheeks?"... "Do you not?"

      Re: Expectations at Defcon

Ive never been to Defcon. I expect to make the largest group of goons, black badge holders and 1337 attendees hate me for owning them once again .

I expect to sleep under my table again.

        Re: Expectations at Defcon

Have I been to Defcon before? Yes. I attended last year.

Expectations? Well, I HOPE to do the following, but I don't expect much more than to have a bit of fun, drink a wee bit, and maybe meet some cool people.

        What I hope to do:
1: Somehow rearrange the space time continuum such that I can see every talk, Q&A, and contest that I want to see.
2: Impress someone enough that he or she (please let it be a she) buys me a beer (or 6).
3: Have someone report me for doing something bad to the Goons who upon arriving decide that I'm much cooler than the piss ant crybaby and the Goons and I spend the next minute or two making fun of the whiner.
4: Find a secret door inside the Riviera that leads to the inner reaches of the complex where they keep all their loot.
5: Assemble a strike team to go with me to attain said loot.
6: Make a breathtaking getaway from the Riv security by leaping off the roof of one of the towers and parasail to safety at Circus Circus.
7: Meet a good looking female hacker who is as equally impressed with my hacking skills as I am with hers.
8: Have way to much to drink and wake up married to before mentioned female hacker.
9: Return home with female hacker, breed mini people and train them in the way of the hacker.

          1) Lurked and wanted to go since DC8, finally got to go DC15, 16, and now 17

          2) Expectations?
          • Self-Serving: To be more organized with my schedule and not let overlapping BH alcohol abuse detour my adventures
          • Have just as good if not a BETTER time then last year (it really was a tremendous experience)
          • Not to miss the HP party and the strippers EVER AGAIN!!!!
          • To continue to have fun with the Apple Remotes while walking the halls and in talks.... too bad I didn't get to mod my badge with the IR hack, I really liked that from last year
          • To make it to the DefCon Shoot... I obviously owe Deviant some alcohol from my hangover-induced oversleeping of last year
          • To perhaps run into HighWiz..... just to buy him an alcoholic beverage....

            1) Not my first time, but some years are more fuzzy than others (I blame this on too much whiskey and Flea's Habanera Rum (tattoo remover included)).

            2) This year I plan on the following:
            * hanging with good friends
            * meeting new people
            * having the younger brother as my money butler again
            * making said younger brother validate my alibi
            * sharing my whiskey with others
            * holding the best Forums Meet ever (with help from Dallas and others)
            * make it all the way through con without having to call work asking for bail money or a favor (I think they still think that one of these years I'm going to call but I never end up having to)
            * spend more time up in the HHV
            * buy another coffee mug, so I can finally bring one with me to work
            * drinking some of Flea's rum, I think I either missed out last year or Flea didn't bring any.
            * Maybe, just maybe I'll get the chance to ride anyone of Vegas roller coasters.

                  1. Been to more than a few DefCon's.

                  2.

                  - I expect to not drive an RV from New Mexico to Las Vegas at 65 miles per hour.
                  - I expect to not give away another smoker.
                  - I expect to bring another DefCon newbie to Vegas and ruin him/her for 3 days straight.
                  - I expect to meet some new people, learn some new things and drink more beer.
                  - I expect to enter a contest I have never entered before.

My expectations change from day to day.

Today I expect to have a foot rub at this year's Defcon. Why? I think I deserve it.

                      1. Yes I went last year.
                      2. I expect another amazing trip! I am going to avoid having a severe caffeine crash at 8pm.
Going to drink, learn some awesome new stuff and maybe meet some cool peoples.
I am going to read through my list of 'things to bring' which i revised the day after getting back from last years con.
I am expecting to not be expecting, so buy me drinks, its not gonna turn a baby into a turd brain.

                        Re: Expectations at Defcon

I came to an epiphany while sitting in my bed last night reflecting on the wonderful time at Shmoo this year. I seem to have a better time at Shmoo than I do at Defcon. I seem to meet more people at Shmoo than I do at Defcon. I feel closer and more connected to the community at Shmoo than I do at Defcon. Being the hacker sort the why came in to play. So why.....? Did I do ecstasy at Shmoo and like rave out? No of course not.

This actually has something do to with expectations so just bear with me.

Often I feel overwhelmed at Defcon; 7000+ hackers, jet lag, flying vs driving, BBQ'a, pools, dunk tanks, 5 tracks, meets, contests, villages, simulators, auctions, Star Trek bars, special rooms, FEDS, music, clubs, drinking, vendors, shoots, parties, press, Vegas, strange people, strip bars, hookers, gambling, ...etc. Being an little AAD it's a lot to take in and a lot competing for ones attention as well as time.

So what I would say to someone going to Defcon for the first time, expect to be overwhelmed especially if you are the sort that doesn't get out much. Looking for that more intimate setting a smaller con is for you. I think you have a better chance of professional networking at a smaller con, than say Defcon.

Going to Shmoo is like going to a small club to see you favorite ban. Going to Defcon is like going to see the Rolling Stones in Yankees stadium. Again all IMHO, and personal experience. Don't get me wrong I like both and my intention was not to turn this into a debate over Shmoo vs Defcon.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. This applies to making babies, hacking, and youtube videos.

I enjoy Shmoo and Defcon for different reasons.

You will get out of any conference what you choose to...

You can have an awful time at Defcon, or an amazing one...it is up to you.

It's that perfect balance of caffeine and alcohol. Too little or too much of one or the other will fuck up your day... My advice, take it.
