i've been searching for a nice .40 carry pistol for some time. the H&K USP compact is divine but still a bit large framed, i think. the Sig P239 was my favorite for a while until i got fed up with the odd placement and really really small size of the slide release handle. (of course, i should really be in the habit of slingshotting the slide back into batter during a reload anyway, one could argue)

the XD series is not bad, but one thing i've never liked is the muzzle safety... correct me if i'm wrong, but if something is pressed right up against the front of the gun, does it still fire? if i'm struggling with someone and the gun is right in their ribs, i don't want to have to step back before i get a round off.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Since, you like the H&K USP-40 Compact, have you checked out the H&K P-2000 and/or P-2000SK? The P-2000 series seems slimmer than the USP Compact.

My LEO friend had a Para Warthog as his off duty gun. He recently switched to the XD Compact .45 ACP which is larger but can hit targets at 25 yards. The Warthog feels good to shoot with it's 3" barrel and .45 ACP; The XD was comparable to his full size Para 1911 as far as hitting the target but it's a 4" barrel and full size frame with a shortened grip. There's is an "out of battery" safety on XD's. You have about 1/8" of backwards slide movement before it locks the trigger. I just tested it on mine, it kicks in right before the chamber is starting to open up so I'm not sure any gun would be able to fire if it got to that point.

Ya know, I never saw anything about a muzzle safety. I haven't had the chance to shove into someone's stomach yet and try it. Fortunately.

The only thing I don't like about the XD is the trigger. It breaks after you think it should break. I let my dad shoot it, and he agrees. Could be I'm just not used to it yet. It's just a slightly awkward pull.

I guess I'll bring my Rem700 (.308), Savage 10-FP (.223) and maybe my XD-40. I look forward to shooting with you guys again and I'll try not to get drunk the night before (again!!!).

Would a complete newbie (to Defcon not shooting), flying in gunless be welcome to join the shoot? Although there may not be much point given the lack of rental possibilities that end?

well... a couple of people are planning on coming, despite not having guns of their own, but they are planning on borrowing firearms from people they know.

given that you are rather new to this particular scene, that may not present itself as quite as viable an option. all participants at the shoot are welcome to fire most of my hardware, provided they show that they can handle things appropriately and safely. i plan on bringing a lot of .22 and .223 ammo and just dividing it into $5 and $20 portions for people who want to put some lead downrange.

still... the selection there will be rather limited. i don't know if i'm bringing any of my pistols.

Sounds like a good way to meet like minded people and perhaps even make friends. It does not however sound like a sure thing so I will probably attend with the idea of chatting to people and getting unwound from the trip in and not the idea of doing a lot of shooting.

Sounds like I might get to do a little shooting at least, which is a bonus already. Count me in. I will be carless (as well as gunless) but more than willing to purchase ammo or help towards fuel.

I'm actually not going to be that free with my ammo this year due to ammo prices. Kinda sad actually, as I'm normally really free with letting people shoot my guns. If they bring their own ammo, thats fine, but if anyone shows up expecting me to give up or sell my ammo they'll be in for a surprise.

Unless of course ammo prices tank in the next 30 days

I return whatever i wish . Its called FREEDOWM OF RANDOMNESS IN A HECK . CLUSTERED DEFEATED CORn FORUM . Welcome to me

Re: So what are people thinking of bringing?

I'll be bringing some or all of the following:

                        Glock 19 (9mm)
                        Glock 36 (45acp)
                        Taurus Judge (45LC/.410)
                        Serbu Super Shorty (870-based) (12ga 3")
                        Remington 870 SPS-T Super Mag W/extra rifled barrel (12ga 3.5")
                        Winchester 1300 Defender (12ga 3")
                        Ruger 10/22 (.22)
Weatherby Mark V Accumark with Leupold 4.5-14X56 B&C VX-L Scope (.300 Wby Mag)

If anyone would like to have a go at any of these, I'm cool with sharing the love. Just be prepared to bring your own ammo (or reimburse me). PM me if you are wanting to shoot any of these, so I can make sure I bring the one you want, that sort of thing.
                        ---

I am interested in checking out any AR15-style rifles. I am just starting to get familiar with these, as I would like to eventually buy/build one. I am interested in first-hand experience and input from current owners. If anyone is bringing anything along those lines and would be willing to let me shoot it, PM me with ammo requirements so I can come prepared.

I would also like to shoot an XD in various calibers. I will already have ammo for that with me, so I am hoping someone brings them.

heh... well, i think we'll be limited to about 100 yards or something, so you'll have to use MOA equivalents if you want to test your 1000 yard reach-out-and-touch-someone. at 100 yards, what would that be... GI Joe or Ken Doll figures, perhaps?

for reference, this year's marksmanship contest will take place only at 25 yards (i like to make it possible for lots of people to at least give it a shot) but it won't be with my scoped and tricked out Ruger 10/22... it will be with another, surprise rifle. like last year, something on the order of a range bag or other gear with the Black Talon insignia will likely be the prize.

It seems like we surely have a terrific event shaping up. I'll be letting Boulder City know we're not coming their way. I think we're going to have a pretty damn good time with this. Heh, as long as no one with really bad firing line safety shows up like this kid...
