  • How to transfer ownership of a forum social-group like a DCG to another user

Steps for present DCG owner looking to transfer forum ownership to a new forum user:

*** NOTICE: this is only for forums. if you plan to transfer ownership in the real world (such as establish a different POC), visit https://defcongroups.org/index.html and contact the DCG coordinator to start the process to transfer responsibility to a new person.

*** NOTICE: For this article, the user "dc_pitascii" is a test user used to document and validate processes or debug reported issues, while the user "number6" is presently a forum Admin taking the place of a DCG owner for this test and documentation.

*** NOTICE: This DCG being transferred is fictional. It was created by sleestak for testing, documentation, and validation. It may be deleted at any time. (Thanks Sleestak!)
    • Present DCG "owner" completes login to forums account.
    • Owner visits https://forum.defcon.org/social-groups
    • Owner finds the social-group DCG in this part of the forums they wish to transfer to another user and click on this DCG (Example: https://forum.defcon.org/node/231536 )
    • Owner locates "gear" icon under lower-right corner of the far right DCG image/icon, and left-clicks. (If you are not an owner or forum Admin or maybe "Forum SuperMod", you probably won't see the gear.)
    • A "DCG Moderator" is NOT a forum moderator. Forum moderators moderate all forum content anywhere and can ban users. DCG Moderators only have limited controls for *content* management within the DCG social space, not user management. They cannot ban, or unban users.
    • A drop-down menu appears, Owner locates line item in drop-down called "Manage Group Manager"

    • New page loads: Owner locates large text-field for , "Add Leader/Organizer" types or pastes the username of the account to eventually become new owner, then owner clicks the submit button called "Add"

Click image for larger version Name:	01_choose-gear-Manage-group-managers_add-would-be-new-owner-forum-username.png Views:	0 Size:	125.7 KB ID:	236973
    • Same updated page re-loads, showing the new username added as "moderator" listed on a row near another row with "owner"
    • Owner locates a submit button on the same row as their username, a button named, "transfer," and selects "transfer"
    • New Pop-up appears, "Transfer Group Ownership": present owner re-types the username previously added as a "Leader/Organizer".

    • Present owner choose "Send Request"
    • For a short time (until the new owner accepts ownership) the present, old owner can cancel the transfer. After the new owner accepts, the cancel option will no longer work:

Steps for new, to-be, DCG owner looking to accept transfer of ownership:
    • New to-be Owner logs into forums account.
    • New to-be Owner locates top-right gray bar above "Forum search box" then locates text/link "Notifcations" , and selects "Notifications"
    • Drop-down should appear, and the new to-be owner should locate the row named "Requests" and select it.

Click image for larger version Name:	04_new-owner-needs-to-login-and-check-notification-requests.png Views:	0 Size:	181.1 KB ID:	236976
    • A new page loads. New to-be owner should locate a request in the form "OLD_OWNER_USER_NAME has invited you to be a moderator of NAME_OF_DCG_LOCATION_LOCATION" with choices "Ignore" or "Accept": choose accept

Click image for larger version Name:	05_new-owner-accepts-offer-to-become-moderator_leader-organizer_manager-for-dcg-social-group.png Views:	0 Size:	104.5 KB ID:	236977
    • Confirmation appears, select ok:

Click image for larger version Name:	06_new-owner-confirmation-accepts-role-as-moderator_leader-organizer_manager.png Views:	0 Size:	27.3 KB ID:	236978
    • New page loads. New to-be owner should locate a request in the form "OLD_OWNER_USER_NAME has invited you to be an owner of NAME_OF_DCG_LOCATION_LOCATION" with choices "Ignore" or "Accept": choose accept

Click image for larger version Name:	07_new-owner-accepts-role-as-new-owner.png Views:	0 Size:	74.9 KB ID:	236979
    • New to-be Owner then should see confirmation. Select ok:

Click image for larger version Name:	08_new-owner-confirmation-accepted-role-as-new-owner.png Views:	0 Size:	26.4 KB ID:	236980
    • Now the "New to-be Owner" should be the "Owner" of the DCG.
    • Now, the Old-Owner is no longer owner. If they were also a "Leader/Organizer" or "DCG Manager" or "DCG Moderator" the new owner can remove them if they want to.
    • New Owner visits https://forum.defcon.org/social-groups
    • New Owner should locate the DCG where they are now owner and click on the link for it. (New-Owner finds DCG in this part of the forums and click on their DCG (Example: https://forum.defcon.org/node/231536 ))
    • New-Owners locates "gear" icon under lower-right corner of the far right DCG icon/image, and left-clicks the gear.
    • A drop-down menu appears, New-Owner locates line item in drop-down called "Manage Group Manager"

    • New page loads showing New-Owner or Leader/Organizer, and any existing Group Managers, and options to add more Leader/Organizers.

Click image for larger version Name:	0C_new-owner-manage-grou-managers-review.png Views:	0 Size:	172.5 KB ID:	236982
    • New-Owner can see if old owner is listed and remove them as a leader/organizer or manager or "DCG Moderator" .
    • Process is complete.
    • Optional steps for new owner of a DCG Social Group:
      • New Owner can review:
      • General Settings
      • Post Settings
      • Group Managers
      • Joined Members
      • Subscribers
      • Invite members

Locate the "Image" icon in the horizontal bar of icons just above the space you type your post, and select it:

A new pop-up should appear. Select the "Upload" tab in that pop-up.

Click on the "Browse.." button and then locate the image you want to upload, on your device, and select it.

Welcome to the DEF CON forums!

Q: How do you know if your post will be well received, or people will complain?
