Well, that's what the bag of gates would be. You run with a bunch of AND, OR, NOR, XOR, NAND, etc etc. Those are essentially the same as programming in assembly code, on a very basic level. Hell, those WERE the assy code in the 40's. :)

A cpu would be fun. What about a 6502? 6510? Go back to serious basics. Nothing better than 8bit. :)

Plus, you could code and complile on your PDA.

Hmmm.. How about one with an IrDA port that scoots around the floor looking for an open vulnerability.

bot with mobile 802.11b repeater looking for dead spots to fill.

Bot with a thermal sensor that can test a hot drink placed near it, and sound an alter when it's cooled to a temp that won't scald your mouth, and then a different alert when it's gotten too cold.

      Ideas....

This could be implemented using error code 406 or 402.

                                Back on topic...

I just got the book "Junkbots, Bugbots, & Bots on Wheels" by Hrynkiw and Tilden. An excellent book for non-EE folks who have lots of junk in their closet (hey! that's me!).

The book has a few suggestions:
                                - Solar drag racing. (No batteries.)
                                - Sumo. Push the other robot out of the circle. (Like a less violent version of battle bots.)
                                - Follow the line.

                                I'm thinking: COMBINE THEM!

                                (1) "Follow the line" drag racing.
                                Anyone can follow the line.
                                Anyone can go fast.
But following a line fast? Too fast = overshoot...

                                (2) Solar "follow the line" drag racing.
                                A little more complexity.
Be sure to add hills, shade, and a tunnel.
                                No batteries allowed.

                                (3) King of the hill.
Two robots on a line -- push the other off.
If it cannot re-acquire the line within 10 seconds, it loses.
                                (Might need size/weight classes here...)

                                (4) Dog races.
Follow the bright light around the track. Multiple robots, bumping is permitted. (No causing damage.)
Dog must initially fit in it's cage. (1" wide)
                                Individual times determine position.
                                Multiple heats. (Dog in heat?)
                                My vision:
                                3-foot x 1.5-foot oval track, counter-clockwise motion.
Lines and walls mark inner and outer rail.
8 robots at the starting line with a wall in front of them.
Wall is removed, light moves around track, and they're off.
Some bump, some get stuck, some get turned around.
2-3 laps to win; opponents are obsticles.
Note: You don't HAVE to follow the light (white? IR? RF?) but it does give a clue about the shape of the track and direction.

                                Thoughts?
