Maybe this will finnal convince people that the AP is NOT going to host DefCon next year.
I do recall mentioning to everyone that it was bought out, and it would be the last year during DC12. But people thought I was trying to start a "defcon cancelled" thread and shrugged it off.
Either way the lvrj (local newspaper) has stated that they are going foward with expansion, and casino mod's. This will make _parts_ of hotel 21>. Don't know if they will zone off entire resort as "18 and old only".
They will be (and have been) demo'ing parts of the resort, does this count towards the "DefCon Curse" where every hotel it was hosted at got torn down eventutually?

Defcon has taken another hotel. Anyone near by get pictures of this new AP, it has sentimental value if you ask me..."Yep, and here is where I passed out" and who can forget..."This is the exact location of pool2girl"

what do you guys think will be the deal with prices for DC13? I'm organizing a small carpool with my friends, so I'm wondering if last year's prices will be an accuarate guide at all to give them. ( room price at DC and the badge price )

While both could change (anything is possible at this point), I wouldn't consider it likely. I will be extremely shocked if the badge is more than $100 or the low-end rooms are more than $160/night. Note that I do include some padding from last year's prices, but those are the prices I quote to my friends.
I wonder how much of DEFCON's character is determined by its venue?
While AP was great for DEFCON I think that the con started take on the character of Alexis Park. Look at DEFCON's demographic, look at the growing numbers luxury cars and SUVs in the AP parking lot during the con and look at the growing number ot 40-somethings drinking beer around the pools.
DEFCON has become a different "scene" than it was years ago. I for one, now use DEFCON to see clients and go to very few talks. In the past--when we all huddled in a large room and learned technical stuff--we became a community. I guess we're a different community now.
Part of this may be due to AP's park-like setting. Maybe something less resort-like would change the vibe? I'm all for shaking things up a bit. A new venue could do that.
OTOH, I hope that DEFCON is not left without a home. There cannot be that many places that could take a con the size of DEFCON, especially if plans need to change on short notice.

The Alexis Park has possibly had an effect on those that attend. It may also be that the 30-somethings drinking beer have simply gotten older and richer over the past 12 years.

I cannot comment on this (having only attended the last third of the conventions), but you may have an interesting suggestion there. I don't know how one track has an advantage over many tracks (and Defcon has to maintain multiple tracks with its current size) except in one manner: you spent the entire day sitting next to the same people.
In recent years, the goons have cleared the rooms out between events. However, for similar reasons, we also stand in line and meet new people while waiting. We may not see the same people all day, but we get invited to more parties.

We have discussed this before. Space is not an issue for a medium-sized convention such as Defcon. The problem is finding a hotel that will put up with a reasonable amount of "damage" for a reasonable price. With a little luck, such a location would also allow us to make temporary changes to the underlying infrastructure.

After starting as a teenager and hacking different systems for over three decades, I have found to in my shock and horror that I'm in my 40's. Go figure. I suspect that it may sooner or later happen to most people.
Also, I can finally afford an SUV. It's a lot better ride than the POS I used to drive as a teen.

sorry to burst your bubble but this sign was up today :( sniffle Alexis Park Grounds
Was that sign really put up today?
Accounting to the pictures's exif records, it looks like it was taken on a Canon Canon PowerShot S50 on August 7, 2004
