that's cool. he can certainly join with you in the operation of your contraption if he wishes. or, if it's just you, that's fine, too. in our virgin run of this little shindig last year there were only four entries... two of the four were from single-person teams. (see the DC13 BCCC results page for more details. page may be up and down later today since i'm doing work on that server... rebuilding a desynced RAID-5 array that is over a TB in size. yeah, that's a whole lotta fun.)

trust me, you'll do fine. i'll refer you to that same link a couple lines above. even people last year who missed the mark or pushed the physics of beer to the breaking point had fun. that's really the whole point... to show up and demonstrate some creative thinking in a casual and entertaining environment. everyone who participates gets free prizes (not to mention plenty of free beverages), there's liquor-related trivia which allows teams and bystanders to win stuff, etc etc. trust me, there's no way to do badly in a game with so few rules. we'd love to see what you come up with.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Plus Deviant gives you beer. Of course you will need to sample the temperature of said beer several times over the course of the contest and in significant volumes per test. It's not like you lose anything :)

Do we have any idea yet on if this will be an indoor or outdoor event? As you might remember, my entry last year was rather messy and probobly nearly explosive (bubbling vat of highly flamable alcohol was probobly not the smartest idea). Just want to approach my design this year from the one that is least likely to cause a fire hazard

heh... beverage. i give out lots of beverage to contestants, as this is the beverage cooling contraption contest (as per the lawyer's advice)... it's supposed to be a contest with, ah, uhm... tea! in my experience, whenever you're ready to partake in an activity involving lots of tea, out of the blue a rowdy element always shows up and suddenly replaces all the tea with beer. i don't know how or why this happens... but it's what i keep telling the cops in my area.

that is one outstanding question, and would be best approached by a discussion with someone who is familiar with the grounds and the flow of the space we'll have for defcon. i'll get into it with DA or DT and try to find out how things are shaping up. i'd like to have an area that allows for lots of passing foot traffic but doesn't get in anyone's way at all. i'll differ to them on what that will be like, altho i have to say that the poolside setup was pretty sweet last time.

my preference would be next to one of the pools in a spot with some shade and an electrical outlet should anyone's designs need one (of course, people are rewarded for self-sufficience if they need electricity).

there seems to be the most support for an outdoor venue of sorts... so let's try to ease things into that direction. i'll make sure the powers that be are aware of our preferences.

Loki151, no need to worry, the object isn't to do well. the object is to have fun. If we get a little cold beer out of it, that's a great side effect. Of course, i'm an english beer fan and it's always served room temperature.

sweet, i look forward to seeing you guys again. my curiousity is awakened as i wonder if the victorious device will be returning or if something new is afoot. heh, don't ruin the surprise and give people hints by telling us here.

Have you considered contacting MythBusters to see if they would be interested in the results of your contest? Don't they film on the west coast? Maybe they would be willing to attend Defcon to see the contest.

Look! They even have their own forums at the discovery site.

i thought about it, perhaps i'll drop them a line. even if they don't check things out or film it (i'm not one for being on TV, anyway) i'll bet they'd get a kick out of hearing about it.

of course, if they were to drop by just for fun and to watch the proceedings, it would be pretty neat to meet them and let them know how much i appreciate and enjoy the work they do on the show. heh, kari byron could get swarmed by all the sex-starved loners who have fantasized about her over the years.

side note - i may be alone in saying this, but while i have an appreciation for kari's cuteness, etc. i have to say that scottie was much more my style when she was still on the show. skillful and mad capable with all sorts of tools... that's attractive in my book.

                            M3 Likey the cold B33R

The average American drinks 22 Gallons of beer annually, and even though this product would demand a large price premium over a traditional can, the convenience factor and bragging rights would make this a must have item.
I refute this statistic (i kill 22 gallons monthly) and delve into the glorious world of BCCC ! I'll probably be "wearing" my contraption all week, so if I'm passed out somewhere along the confines of the Defcon event someone just roll me over to the contest and we'll be good to go.

^^ See ya there << game face

First timer, but happy to be here and part of the team.
I'm in, and may have a partner (undecided as of yet)

BTW, I gave these folks a call, and they were very interested in the event-- maybe to the point of bringing out some "product" and conducting a fully interactive demonstration. http://www.turbotap.com

Please hold your applause until this actually comes together...
