ISP-related issued cause the forums (as well as other servers) to be unreachable.
The Forums continued to run, but were inaccessible.
Looks like they are available again.

When we called the ISP to find out about the outage their pre-recorded messages was "We are experiencing nation-wide packet loss" Doh!

        Waiting period has been altered:
The official notice has been updated

Now instead of 24 hours forced lurking , 48 hours to only post replies, and 2 weeks before being able to start new threads they have been changed:
Less than 24 hours = forced lurking
24 to 47.99999 hours = able to reply to open threads, and make new threads in select forums
2 days to 13.99999 days = able to post new threads in all open forums.
Over 2 weeks and a few posts in the the postcount provides a slightly larger PM Box.

We've been silently running with this for a few months to compare spam levels and abuse with the shorter periods to the longer ones. They were close enough to be equivalent.

        Thanks!

Email confirmation was broken for a while. It looks like it is working again. If you tried to register with the forums over the past few days, and never received your email confirmation, we can do it manually. Email defconforums andatsymbolhere gmail.com fro the email address you used to register with the forums, and we can manually validate your email address.

The same waiting period and rules will apply as with other users, but the waiting period starts from the day and time that you first registered with the forums.

i get a "broken crypto" icon on the forum main page (well, for me that's the "search results" page since i link directly to "new posts" in my bookmark) at presnet. when viewing threads, however, the SSL indicator appears fine. anyone else seeing this?

i'll try later to mess with settings and isolate what elements mozilla thinks are not being encrypted.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Were the DefCon Forums that only site you were viewing in your browser? If there were other ones, especially if they use SSL as well, then this is a bug in firefox... If it was just the forums open, then it's most likely something else.

I don't see that. Can you provide screen shots?

Are you using a proxy of any sort, including a caching proxy?

Do you have any extra plugins that don't come with the browser? Can you verify that this problem appears when you don't have any plugins installed?

arg, didn't take them... and now the issue does not present itself.

nope, not that i know of. Tor was disabled at the time. Comcast's network may do something upstream from me, but i have no local proxy.

quite a few. AdBlock, FlashBlock, and NoScript are the primary "i like my internets like they were in 1999!" plugins. Also there are TorButton and User-Agent Switcher.

if i see it again i'll disable and re-enable them one by one and try to see if i can learn anything.

I've made not changes to the forum settings or web server settings between the time of the report and now. Please let us know if you see it again.

They have done slick things int he past. I would more likely guess they hoarked up their DNS in some way, or were providing incorrect resolution to name lookups. That (dns issue) has happened to comcast customers.

Ah. But if it is not presenting the issue now, then it would seem it is unlikely that a plugin was munged during of the few firefox upgrades that have been pushed out.

if i see it again i'll disable and re-enable them one by one and try to see if i can learn anything.
Cool deal. Thanks man. Repeatability of problems really cuts down on troublshooting and diagnostics.
