Sir, has your carry-on been with you the entire time?

Uh, no, not really. Actually, some computer hacker gave it to me to bring...

Yea, won't the TSA dudes love the electronics. Let's toss in a bunch of red wires for good measure. :-) And a clock.

Additionally, when you consider where it will be, what are the chances that gunpowder, or powder residue may land on the box/case?

Add the the above to the sample Q and A above, and a test of the case for explosives, and you might be spending more time in line than usual. (hah!)

I flew to CA in full battle uniform and thee TSA dolts tested me for "gunpowder residue."

          I had none.

I felt like I was not doing my job!

Be happy you didn't have any. There have been recent news reports were the TSA have detained servicemen who tested positive.

I could probably get someone to xspray the case to make sure it doesn't test positive before it leaves.

theprez98 you would LOVE what they have in Tampa for security. They have these little booths you walk into and puffs of air shoot out and there is a sniffer that tests the air.

The fun part is all these little sundresses and mini skirts, and boy do they go flying.

Re: a new happening - the Traveling Terabyte Project

good news and bad news update

                      first, the bad...

                      1. filesystem - The EXT2 implementation absolutely sucks for the win32 environment. i had the volume all formatted and mounted, but transferring any data to or from the drive made all the windows boxes upon which i tested it take a total shit. (some would freeze, one bluescreened, at no point could i reliably move data around)

request for comment and suggestion - what operating system and computing environment do you think is most likely being used by the parties who are slated to receive this? (astcell, prez, etc... care to speak up? what insights can you offer about any buddies? what O/S is the most commonly-seen on laptops or other computers when folks get deployed?)

can anyone with more experience than i speak about how well NTFS drives can be handled and read/written from a NIX environment?

                      2. transport case - the vendor i thought i'd found with a terrific deal on pelican cases did not actually have what i thought they had. all this come to light after a long delay in shipping, receiving, etc. i'm so upset by this whole mess.

i've priced pelican cases in the size i'd need for everything (the 1400 family would work best) and they're way more than i can afford. (they're over $80) right now i can barely keep a full tank of gas in my truck.

does anyone have a pelican (or other similarly-rugged) case that they could donate or sell to the project at very low cost? (i'd happily pay for shipping, of course, if something was being donated)

does anyone have a better suggestion for what to use? i suppose we could always just use an ammo can if we padded the hell out of the inside. still, i'm open to other ideas.

                      now for the good...

the good news is that the drives and enclosures are working well. the enclosures, while plastic, are fairly rugged. the support both USB2 and FireWire and have built-in fans for added cooling.

holy crap, man! that would be a blessing and a half. whose balls do i have to wash to make that happen? (btw... a check could present minor logistical issues... but a paypal transfer would certainly work.)

I was going to offer an old 1100, but it looks like you got an offer you can't refuse.

If DaKahuna doesn't have a PayPal account, I'll be more than happy to facilitate the transfer. Check to me, my PP to Deviant. I know both of you, so it doesn't present a challenge.

As for deployers, everywhere in Iraq I've seen overwhelmingly Windows-based laptops, and a small handful of Macs. I have yet to come across someone (besides myself) with anything Linux-based. Every base I've been to has Windows-based computers in the MWR facilities.
