Re: a new happening - the Traveling Terabyte Project

all dates and times will now hinge on the logistics of filling the TTB with content. i will likely ask Nikita or possibly converge about the prospects of obtaining all the DefCon content from them. (nikita works in the offices and converge seems to have been one of the hardcore RSS cowboys when they first were released)

i'd also like to shoot an email to the shmoo crew since they made all their con videos available publicly, as well. in each case, i could just expend the time and bandwidth of downloading, but i'm looking for the fastest possible solutions. of course, if anyone who is attending HOPE this coming weekend has huge archives of goodness they want to contribute (or if anyone here has downloaded all of the content i've described above) they can catch up with me in the lockpick village there where i'll either have the TTB or i'll have some huge-ass storage medium available.

for now, my contributions have been more entertainment than information (but there's a fair bit of the latter, too). my personal file archives being mirrored onto the TTB include full collections of the following programs...

    The Simpsons
    Futurama
    Family Guy
    Firefly
    Monty Python's Flying Circus
    Mythbusters
    Penn & Teller - Bullshit
Penn & Teller - Unpleasant World
    Robot Chicken
    Band of Brothers
    Chappelle's Show
    The Muppet Show
    Weeds
    The West Wing
    Wonder Showzen
    Absolutely Fabulous
    Sifl & Olly

... there's also an absolute assload of other misc. content (partial collections of shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Daria, In Living Color, WhiteSword TV, etc) loads of music videos, shared music archives, etc. As far as more legitimately informative things go... well, as much past Con content as I have will be on the TTB, as well as tons of documentaries and offerings from the History Channel or Discovery Channel. (i could watch shows like "Modern Marvels" and "Monster Garage" all day long)

add to that whatever else the rest of our community manages to upload to the project and i think we'll have ourselves a rather nice data care package to send to folks whose lives need a little diversion and entertainment.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

yes, there is a layer of the foam about 3/4" thick that rests between the two drives. they were too large to stand upright in the case, so i laid them out that way.

i think the guestbook notepad will be a great spot for such things, since there's less chance of them being rubbed off or scuffed over time. however, what i'm really looking forward to are photos, if possible, of the TTB setup amid a sea of whatever smiling faces it's making happy where it happens to be at that moment. that's the sort of thing that will go on the web site. (i really should register a domain, etc. for all this. anyone have suggesstions as to the best way to register a web site that best insulates a person from it? i mean, you all know who i am and that i'm spearheading the process, but i just like to keep anonymity at as many levels as possible.)

Wow Deviant! Talk about over and above the call.. You're the best.. I'd go on, ad nauseum, but I don't have tons of time. So far I've worked 33 hours in 2 days.. : )

I have a few ideas about security and such.. I know it's difficult to determine who can be trusted to have this sent to them so why not establish points of contact in different area. AST in his, Prez in his and me at mine.

Just like mirrored sites, people go to one place in a geographical area for the best access. I'm afraid there's no redundancy tho.

I have content to add too, piles of TV shows in DivX. I currently have Yellow Machine's TeraByte NAS (RAID 5 600 Gb or so) hooked up to my 2 laptops and a Macmini. I'd be more than happy to fill er up from your system and donate some in return. In addition, when the Mobile Drives move, I'll still have the ability to pass it along.

One caveat to sending things here, no pornography. I'm sure nobody would like to be pulled into an office and asked questions about the questionable drive that just got inspected.

I would suggest something like Axcrypt to secure directories that might be 'interesting' to inspectors and ship it with the decrypt only software so nobody has to install software permanently to view the documents. Then email the passphrase to the recipient. Instead perhaps some file hide utilities. I know we should have nothing to hide, but we could get in trouble for being delivered 'hacker training' tools.

As for putting things in the case, I haven't been able to get a challenge coin yet, but I'm sure I can find some region specific stickers, patches or something.

Anyways, I don't really have time to properly plan or do anything other than make a few suggestions and proclaim loudly Deviant's awesomeness!

Take care all and be safe,

PS: AST, it's been a while, drop me a line and let me know where you're at.

Re: a new happening - the Traveling Terabyte Project

I could kick in the most recent two seasons of Dr Who and the first 3 seasons of farscape if the content was desired.

I had been working on porting Strongbad emails to divx, but was sidetracked by something shiny with random movement.

Additionally I still owe you my tapings from dc12, if you havent already aquired those talks, perhaps the best thing would be to bring you the tapes in a couple of weeks at con.

Hope things are well for you sir.

Re: a new happening - the Traveling Terabyte Project

Hey Guys, Gals, and everyone in between,

The TTBP is rapidly underway, I'm actually beefing up the disks as we speak, right now the first disk is now filled and as I'm typing and there is only 365 gigs left on the second but I'm only a tenth of the way through of the content I planning on upping to it so, maybe there will be a little space left or we'll have to do some reshuffling, and as far as I can see there are no duplicate files.

So far it looks like I'll have.

              -BBS The Documentary
              -Every 007 Film
-MI5 (Spooks) - highly recommend watching it if you can get it.
              -Venture Bros.
              -Sealab 2021
              -Curb Your Enthusiasm
-Mind, Body, and Kick Ass Moves
              -John Doe

And those are just the series not the movies, and music content, etc etc blah blah blah.

When this is done I'd like to see the faces of those guys when they recieve this care package.

Hopefully they'll send back videos and photo's of them over their, possibly some *cough*NVD's *cough* even though those are classified as weapons. (One can certainly dream)

Anyway that's my update for now.

If not before I'll definitely see you guys at Defcon with the TTBP.

              -Eric. - out

It is perhaps a small contribution, but I can add some of the pics and videos I've taken while I've been over here. Might be a close as you get to a front-seat Humvee ride.

Not to rain on the parade and IANAL, but did somebody check up on the implications of putting copyrighted tv shows on the TTB ?

;) Yeah I know.. But better me, than the NCIS guy wanting a joboffer from RIAA, and using a NARMY guy to get it...

I understand the fair use clause, so I'm guessing that taped tvshows from on-air transmissions should be covered, but what about anything transferred from bought or rented DVD's ? Would that be covered by Fair Use ?

i'm not a lawyer and i'm not 100% sure of this, but i would view the TTB as akin to friends borrowing each other's videos or CDs, etc. it's circulating within a closed circle of acquaintances, it's not being made indescriminantly public, etc.

also... for god's sake, we're trying to bring a little happiness to some soldiers in the field... it's not like we're distributing kilograms of hash to school children. if someone in the government has time to get in a twist about this then i've lost all hope for my leaders. (well, i think that may have happened a while ago... but still)

I agree with Deviant here. If it was being sold or a fee was being charged then that would be a different matter. There may be some gray area around the rights to share a copy vs the original media but what the hell, there are always some lawyers who take our view of things at the CON's.

When I was in Bosnia we had movies like MEN IN BLACK before they were seen in the states. We had producer's preview versions of many flicks that Hillywood had sent to us. The MIB that I saw had scenes that were deleted in the theater version!!!

So I doubt this is going to be any different that recording a radio show onto cassette tape, or a video show to VHS and sending it to a soldier who misses home. Ig you feel guilty, just include the commercials. They are appreciated too.

I'd say it's silly but I own the dvd's and vhs for these, so I'd like to see them bitch about this, but I agree it would be absolutely silly when one owns the product and let's a friend borrow it. Oh to the days of betamax(insert rant here).
