Re: a new happening - the Traveling Terabyte Project
I also have some married with children, and ass loads of viral videos aval for the project.
In addition, Vegas 2.0 would be more then happy to create a "replication repository" where a "master" or "gold CD" can be stored for backup and futher cases being created. We now have redundant ISP connections and still have the growing tarabyte storage array being develped at our labs. Right now were only at 2tb but that should change in next 3 months or so (Apple XRaid servers are starting to go on clearence ;)

Re: a new happening - the Traveling Terabyte Project
I am happy to announce the safe arrival of the Traveling Terrabyte Project in Iraq!
The Pelican case was safely packed by astcell and arrived yesterday. I picked it up today and am filling my spare HD space with lots of goodies. I plan to hold onto the TTP just long enough to copy what I want, and then ship it out to the next person. I have a couple of ideas of who will be next, but if you know someone in country let me know and we can add them to the list. In-country mail should be free for us, so it shouldn't be a problem sending it around Iraq for a little while.

woot! thrilled to hear it. be sure to add your LAT/LONG to the guestbook and any comments you'd care to share. (did astcell remember to do that?) photos would certainly be kickass, too.

i have a short list. is all in country mail free? even to non-uniforms? one person who was high on my priority list isn't deployed there but rather was sent there by his contract work. (KBR tech guy)
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want." - Trent Reznor

astcell included a small notebook, yes. I'll add my info to the notebook and pass it on. I'll also add some photos and videos from Iraq.

I have about ~100 gigs of free space between my laptop HD and my external USB HD (ok, well considerably less than that now that I've been copying ;)). My wife sent me a stack of 25 DVDs so that's another 100+ gigs there. My favorites are probably as diverse as anyone, which would reflect what I have chosen so far to copy. Basically a little of this and a little of that. I obviously don't have the space for everything, but some stuff just doesn't interest me, so the variety of "stuff" is a very GOOD thing. I'll probably end up with a fairly evenly divided take.

hackajar is going to pass me the name of someone who will most likely be next after me. I would be happy to include the name of your KBR friend so he can get it next. Not sure if KBR gets free mail in country...that's something I'll have to check out. Either way, he could have a military member send it on his behalf if it was a problem.
As exciting as it is to get all this material, my goal is to copy now and watch later, and have it in the mail in the next 48-72 hours so that more people get to enjoy it.
Re: a new happening - the Traveling Terabyte Project
This is great. I registered www.travelingterabyte.org but I pointed it to a news article, if anyone wants the run a site for it I can point it any which way. Maybe once we have a story or two to add to it. I already alerted the Tom's Hardware dude to it's receipt in Iraq.
I did add my LAT and LONG and some other stuff to the notebook, but I used Google for the numbers, I did not think it appropriate to use my exact coordinates. I also added my ipod stuff, about 40GB to the mix.
And of course Prez98 got a Defcon t-shirt in the box as well. :-)

It has been a blast to start the ball rolling!
My only concern about the whole deal is the one that has been addressed in this thread, the issue of copyrights and such. I personally don't have a problem with any of it. But any stories and/or advertising about the project needs to be carefully worded. For example, I mentioned it in my blog, and referred to it as a project to bring defcon to those who missed it. Which is true, but avoids the other "issues." My concern is not over those in the states but over-zealous military mail people.

Mark on the package:
"Source of entropy to ehance the entropy pool and provide andom numbers that are more random than others."
That'll confuse them. Then again, that might be how they choose to label " 80Megaton MIRVing nuclear warheads"
Better yet, call it, "dirthy clothes" or "3-day-old fish tacos."
Re: a new happening - the Traveling Terabyte Project
After a short delay on my part, the TTP is on the move again. Deviant should have the details as to the recipient and should be able to get in contact with him to ensure he gets it.
Re: a new happening - the Traveling Terabyte Project
Well... I don't remember getting told it was shipping to me and when it arrived, the mailroom almost called the bomb squad when I didn't remembering ordering any "hard drives." Laugh!
What a fantastic way to brighten up my day. My thanks to everyone who's gotten this project rolling and on the way. Deviant, as usual, you're brilliant!!!
Remind me to put you down for an extra helping of tasty scotch wonderfulness when I get back to Canada. The box is exellently laid out, the hard drives well cushioned and provisioned with both firewire and usb. Also, all the appropriate adapter are in there. Nice set of power adapters, anyone have a link of where to buy them? Nice 'n compact with all the usual 'head' styles.
Thanks to everyone who helped forward this on, I'll copy it up to my terabyte NAS and send it on its way. Whose next? Oh yeah, I just ripped some Anime goodness so I'll get some of that on das boxen. Want me to stick any Kuwait/Canada stickers to it?
Cheers,

Panthera,
That "salt shaker" adaper is made by Targus. www.targus.com.
Fourth from the bottom on this Targus (US) on-line store:
Oddly enough, the Canadian side of the site doesn't carry them, only the US side. They are available at most Staples here in the States. If you can't order one from the US store for some reason, let me know and I'll purchase one locally and ship it to you.

Re: a new happening - the Traveling Terabyte Project
Hey thanks for the tip and the offer. I've moved my credit card address to my APO so I can now get things shipped from almost any online store.. It's been great.... and expensive. : ) Y'all have so much more to choose from!

heh... not to rain on anyone's parade... but pretty soon just one terabyte volume at a person's local level won't be enough to simply mirror things and move on...
so there you have it, the secret's out now... i made a second TTB and it will start to make its way around, as well. preliminary contents are slated to include...
a full collection of DefCon 14 talks (video and audio)
full set of shmoo rainbow tables
possibly a full collection of shmoocon talks
a duplicate of the MP3 archive, which has grown beyond its original 100 GB size
a complete collection of South Park (which i was surprised to realize grew into not a bad show. i had lost insterest after the second or third season when i was younger... but i have to say some of the more recent stuff is hillarious. poking fun at scientology, fundamentalism, etc. etc.)
full collection of the trippy 1960s UK spy-related drama The Prisoner
full retro-gamer collection of Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis emulators along with a full ROM archive of every title ever released on those systems
so, yes, once i finish using it to temporarily move data around at work where a disk array is acting like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Desert Tan TTB will start a voyage.
Want me to stick any Kuwait/Canada stickers to it? ... Signed the log.
sweet, man. that would rock. perhaps after you the first volume will return to home base for maintenance, updates, etc. i can't wait to see the log and any stickers it's gained.
would always love action shots of it, as well... photo or two of it setup in someone's far flung locale, attached to a computer making surrounding people happy.
