So, the question is, shitty contract and high price aside, who DOESN'T want one?

    I don't, and here's why...

Apple has effectively launched a pre-emptive thermonuclear attack on the whole handheld marketplace for the next 4-6 months. I'm all for early adoption of technology but I can't wait for Nokia or Samsung to reverse engineer an iPhone & present a handheld that will drive circles around the iPhone.

I don't. My Verizon phone already does what I want including playing MP3s in stereo, carries my contacts, calender, etc.

Well, there's already the Nokia N800:

As I experienced last year at con, I could really use an omnipresent ssh connection. I ended up correcting some problems on our production servers using the hotel wireless in a relatively secluded area, on a laptop I didn't own and which probably hadn't been patched in awhile.

                Re: iPhone

..for me, that's the last thing I care for a phone to do. And if you can communicate yourself in a 10 second SMS/Email ... I better not have to talk to you for a goddamn half hour because you haven't discovered those nifty buttons that display letters. There is a time and place for voice.. and it is thankfully becoming far fewer.

An all-in-one kind of unit gives me 1, and only 1, thing to carry around. I rapidly discovered some time ago that I can go months or years without touching a camera; but put one on the phone in my pocket and I use it because its there.. regardless of how crappy the quality. My mp3 player is awesome, but if my phone plays mp3s I'm likely to maintain a minisd of music.

                *shrug*

I'm just not convinced Apple will offer something reasonable to make me say wow.. when I can already do more, faster, with far less cost. It's the one and only reason I still sit here without a powerbook to this day. I have come close, but never found a way to justify an Apple product. .. as far as I'm concerned they can keep taking money from the stumps that fall into trend-tech.

the question isnt weather or not they can cram any service you name into it, the question is weather or not those services will be worth a damn. lets face it, the only way one of those things is gona get to the point where WE realy want one is when they open source the gsm protocol and let us make our OWN phones <_<

                      Re: iPhone

It looks Identical to the cinguler phone I had last year with the addition of a touch screen. It even has the same features. There touch screen technology /"MultiTouch" functions the same as my 7 year old PDA.

There TV streaming solution has also been out a couple year's. I forget what it's called though.

How this will "revolutionize" the Industry is known only to the people who manufactured this stuff before Apple.

Too bad they abandoned RISC architecture. Now there systems are just a PC with a fancy BSD variant.

I'm sure there is a cosmetic difference that demeans my entire post some how...

cosmetic and ui, from what i've been told .. 'dont underestimate the value of a good ui'. this being told to someone that uses XFree almost exclusively to leverage the number of text consoles he can possibly keep on one screen.

Still brings to question; what's the difference?

I don't think I'm alone when saying I'm let down. I just knew there was gonna be some significant hardware advantage, or new media distribution system, or even a new networking solution. I can already buy stuff that does what there new products do, and more for a lot less money.

I guess I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum of converge. I like having more than one item because if you have everything in one and the battery dies then I've lost it all but if my cellphone dies then I've still got my mp3 play and my camera, but I guess that just me and I'm weird.
There is nothing more dangerous than people with a little knowledge. Which means society is mostly safe.

I completely agree. The only reason I don't want one is because I've had several bad experiences with apple in the past. Perhapse if they improved their customer service a bit I would concider it but I don't think that'll happen any time soon.
