heya,
so i'm up to my usual hijinx with respect to a surplus of wickedly large drives coupled with a desire to send content far and wide.
while the traveling terabytes are on their way back to home base for their annual refit, i do have other resources that i'd like to share. my desire to push content around to my friends was also given a rather huge boost recently due to an exceedingly generous act by a member of our world who (despite being a bit detached from our community as one of the people caught up in last year's security ban from the Riv) recently shared movie collections with me.
now with over 200 titles in my archive (not to mention the ever-growing collection of TV shows) i simply have to keep this goodwill and generosity going. the spare 500 Gig external drive that i used in the most recent shuffle is not going to sit idle here. it must be sent around to friends and associates who are in need of entertainment.
so thus the call goes out: if you are experiencing a summer lull (light hours at the office where you can goof off and still get paid, time down the shore where you'd like rainy day insurance, or unexpected travel during which you need a distraction) and would like to fill it with films and videos, become a part of the FedEx circle i'm starting here.
primary arrangements will be made via PM (if you're interested in the content list, for example, since i won't be posting it here. not that private transfers of stuff among friends aren't legal, but still... no need to publicly involve the forums explicitly) but i should state that there are some rules which i'm laying down here...
1. speed is the key - this is going to be a FedEx circle on meth. speed will be essential, since i want to try to get this drive to as many people as possible as quickly as possible. all other rules are based on this one overriding rule.
2. FedEx means FedEx - i don't work for them or own stock in the company or anything, but we're sticking to this carrier exclusively and using their AirMail service exclusively. I'd like to even see people using overnight or 2-day service, but 3-day "saver" service is fine. i'll be keeping a running log of the tracking numbers to monitor the drive's progress and see anyone who drops the ball. (also, insurance of about $250 to $300 is necessary unless you wanna pay for a new drive outright if something goes wrong)
3. quick turnarounds - if you're next on the list of recipients, make certain you'll be around to receive the package. a missed delivery means you go to FedEx the same evening that you came home and found a door hanger. take one or two days at the most to pull whatever content you want from the drive, then dispatch it back on its way. having 500 GB of free space is a good idea if you don't want to pick and choose but instead just want to copy everything and sort through it later. the drive (like the TTB volumes) supports both FireWire and USB2.
4. at first, friends only - much like the TTB project, which started out as exclusively people i knew and then grew to travel to "friends of friends" this FedEx Speed Session will first just be open to people whom i know personally. after the first few weeks of hopping among my close friends whom i trust, maybe the drive will start to spread to others whom folks care to vouch for. however, instead of vouching for someone... if i know you personally you could just be their link in the chain. plan little groups of sharing before you PM me. if five of you are all buddies, maybe pick one person to receive this drive and cache the content, then share among each other later.
in another post, TheCotMan made a cool calculation of how people shipping large drives around can be better than having your own personal fiber connection. i'd like to see the absolute maximum to which we can push that sort of analogy. heh, maybe i'll make you all shirts that say "my other OC-12 is my mailbox" or something.
so, let the flurry of PMs fly. by this weekend whomever i know that has replied will be shuffled into an organized transit list and a schedule will be drawn up. you'll be alerted of the approximate time you should be receiving the package (we're shooting for two people per week but i'd like to beat that) and the address of the next stop after yours. feel free to anonymize your shipping address in any way you wish when you sign up with me. naturally i'm not working for the MPAA and i'm not maintaining lists of this stuff, but keep things as secret as you wish.
you guys all rock and i just live a hard scramble life of trying to keep up with your coolness and karma, hence the reason i pull projects like this and the TTB out of my ass. it's my eternal challenge to show gratitude to such terrific friends.
