    Cool!

    Sounds like fun! :D

All I've got is a Linksys card on my laptop, but I do have wheels. Can fit three others in my car comfortably. It's an Intrepid so there's good leg room in the front and back.

    Sending you an email blackwave.

No driving for me this year. The Blue Cut fires closed down Highway 15 for eleven hours the other day, I'd not want to risk that sort of delay.

OK, scratch that. I'm buying an Orinoco Gold before the con. I've got MapPoint so I'll just need to find a "cheap" GPS.

Damn, lockpicks, wardriving kit, liquor, my spending money for this is going quick!
        :D

Edit: Just wanted to ask, I've seen people saying on other boards that the "Dell TrueMobile 1150" is the same as the Orinoco Gold cards. Anyone use one and how well did it work. Overstock as "refurbished" units for $39.99 and a $5 off coupon. Any opinions?

        Thanks,
        Kai

to my knowledge the orinico is no different from my wavelan, except a new actualized name (and the fact that I only have a silver).. I can't say about the dell with authority, but it really wouldn't surprise me
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Damn Dell, they require you to logon to download their stuff. It looks as if though the ORiNOCO drivers/firmware updates do not recognize this card, but Dell has its own drivers/firmware/utils for this card. It isn't as simple as just using the ORiNOCO software to update the cards... currently we are in progress of finding more answers... a few of us bought a few of these today, but we have had some slight complications. I will post here if it is worth it to get or not.

                  Thanks blackwave.

Oh, I sent you an email to trying to sign up for this gig, so let me know when you start building teams. I'm still new at this wireless hacking thing, but since I'll be driving I'm hoping the more experienced guys'll be pluggin' away!

                  Thanks,
                  Kai

                      Internal or External?

I was wondering if you guys have had any experience with the dell truemobile 1150 INTERNAL Mini Pci modems. I presently have a Linksys ver.1.0 and a ver. 2.5 PCMCIA. I think i am going to get a truemobile, but cant decide which i should get, internal or external. I have a Inspiron 4000 btw.

                      Thanks

I use PCMCIA cards, depending on what you want to use it for:
Supported by NetStumbler, and a few sniffers
                        ORiNOCO GOLD(Hermes Chipset)
                        TrueMobile1150(Rebadged ORiNOCO GOLD)

                        Supported by most sniffers
                        ActionTec(Prism Chipset)
                        USR2410(Prism Chipset)

refurb for cheap: (a lot of ppl are buying these up right now)
Dell TrueMobile Wireless PCMCIA Network Card
The TrueMobile 1150 PC Card is interoperable with other manufacturers' high-speed IEEE 802.11b compliant systems. It's fully compliant with the WECA Wi-Fi standard. True Mobile offers a low cost, flexible, and easily scalable solution. Save big on wireless technology today!

                          Magellan 750

ok - so my hertz rental car has a magellan 750 in it (marketed as Neverlost).

Does anyone have one of these? I'd love to use this gps for my wardriving...

And on the note of making this an official event... hmmm.

How about we treat it as a scavenger hunt? Break up into teams. go for a drive (time limit of 1 hour? 2 hours?) and then the teams dump their files into mappoint and the team w/ the most nodes discovered and mapped get a prize?

Sounds like a good time to me... BUT I AM A FRIGGIN GEEK so what the hell do I know?

One thing to remember if your going to go war driving wtih your laptops:

TRY AND GET A POWER INVERTER BEFORE HAND IF POSSIBLE.

It is a deviec that plugs into your cigerette lighter and inverts the power stream to allow you to plug your laptop in with a regular wall outlet plug.

For those of us who have batteries that dont last much more than 2 hours, it would come in really handy.

a 175 watt invertershould be able to power 2 laptops fine, and they are cheap.

If you cant get one before you get down there, the Walmart that is onl ya 8 min drive away has em in their automotive section.

(war drove las vegas at last years DC9)

now might be a good time to build those pringle can antennas?
                              :)

just be sure _not_ to get a power converter... heheh sorry

how long of a stretch should I plan on the driving? the laptop thats coming with me shall have 2 batteries that'll get me about 5-6 hours of uptime, maybe more if staying away from windows or x, or dnetc...

for even longer drives without a break, turbines could be fashioned to harness piss pressure... only thing to worry about is leakage.. heh
