  • 2010 DEFCON 18 Ninja Party Announcement

All of us at Ninja Networks are happy to announce that the Ninja Party will be returning to DEFCON 18, with a new twist.

Last year, we took the party off-site for the first time, and the experiment was a resounding success. The turnout was amazing, and it was far and away the best event we'd ever thrown.

The only downside was that we *drank the entire hotel out of booze* by 4am.

With that in mind, this year we're making a big change. For the first time, instead of just a bar or a simple venue, the Ninja Party will be taking over an entire boutique hotel. The whole property, from the front door on. We have a huge amount of space, so there will be quiet areas to go talk, loud areas to party, and everything in between. I've personally always wanted to have a setup that allowed for that, so I'm excited about it.

I'm also particularly excited about the pools - an entire section of the party will be in the courtyard at the pools. We haven't had a good DEFCON pool party since the days of the Alexis Park, so I think it's time we bring that tradition back.

This was made possible through generous contributions from our two partners - Facebook and Lookout Mobile Security. If you see anyone from either of these companies, buy them a drink, because without them there would be no badges and no party.

All the info you need on-site will be included with your Ninja Badge, but here's some of the key points:

Q: When is the Ninja Party?

A: The 2010 Ninja Party will be held Saturday, July 31st, from 9pm until it's done.

    Q: Do I need a ticket?

A: Just your Ninja Badge, or a Plus-One given to you by someone else.

    Q: Is it open bar?

A: Of course it's open bar.

Q: How do I get there? How do I get back?

A: We will be running four non-stop party buses (read: liquor on the buses) to the venue non stop between 9pm and about 4am.

Q: How long will it take to get there?

A: Just a few minutes. It's just off of Paradise (the street that runs right behind the Riviera). Fear not, it was totally fine last year, and this year the shuttles have booze on them. :)

Q: How do I find the shuttle buses?

A: Go outside the back of the Riviera near DEFCON registration. There will be a very obvious Ninja-themed shuttle bus stop sign. It's brushed aluminum and has a glowing red shuriken on the top. It's just over five feet tall. You can't miss it. If it gets stolen, just hang out until a big shuttle bus comes by, and see if it has anything Ninja-themed in the front window.

Q: Is it really a pool party?

A: We have the whole property. So there will be an inside party at the bar, and an outside party in the courtyard with the pools. There is a bar at the pool. You don't have to get in the pool, but you can if you want. There's some nice cabanas set up.

Q: Will there be live music?

A: Yes. The Minibosses will be on stage outside, as well as a surprise guest or two. Also Jackalope and your favorite DEFCON DJ All-Stars will of course be appearing, and there will be multiple areas of the property with different music.

Q: Are we going to get shut down for noise?

A: No. We have a "no noise complaints" clause in our contract with the property.

Again, all the info you need will be included with your Ninja Badge. If you have questions, reach out to me.

Is it just me or does it seem that facebook is looking to monetize defcon/other conferences in the future?

If by "facebook" you mean just about any "company", then yes, you are 100% correct. But Facebook is only sponsoring an event here, not DefCon at large. It's like when Fabcorp used to sponsor the wardriving competition, or company xyz used to sponsor event abc.
In other words, nothing to see here...

I'm not privy to the actual numbers either, but I do know that DefCon itself doesn't have any corporate sponsors. Some individual contests and events have sponsors, and some don't.

Many of the contests and events at DefCon take not only a significant amount of time but also a considerable amount of money.

Take DC101... or better yet the Mystery Challenge as an example, I know Lost puts out 1000's of dollars of his own money to do that contest. The Ninja's like many others at DefCon create an event because that care about the community and the people that attend DefCon, so what's the problem with them having a sponsor or two to offset the cost?

Apologies to Barkode and the Ninja's for hijacking the thread a bit.

I did not read his post as bashing us for having some sponsor. but more questioning if Facebook was trying hard to push into this space.

I didn't take his as bashing you either. But I take it as him questioning facebook and sponsorships in general for contest/games to a degree.

Which is why I tried to give an explanation of it from my POV.

I could be entirely incorrect with my take on his post though.

Re: 2010 DEFCON 18 Ninja Party Announcement

Had a great time at last years Ninja Party, and met some kick ass people. You guys rock and it did not disappoint. Well done!

I hope to score a ticket to this years gathering- or if someone feels generous, I would love to get the electronic badge. I've read on your website and it sounds like someone has been busy crafting the uber 2010 version!

How did the photo booth work out from last year? What was the end result with what everyone did?

                  See you in 3 weeks...
