  • Cost and Age Requirements

Hi, I'm new to the forums and have a few questions about defcon. I'll be 15 in time for Defcon 11, and i was wondering if this would be old enough to be able to attend defcon without a guardian, like a parent. If it is in a Casino hotel, would anyone be willing to be my guardian :) Also, i was wondering the cost, how much is the cover charge to get into defcon, and i was wondering if some people who had been there before could suggest how much hotel rooms cost, and how much cash you would recommend to bring. I might not be able to go this year but hopefully i'll make it for Defcon 12 :). Oh, and i'm located in Nova Scotia Canada, and was wondering if anyone from there is going/thinking of going. My friend, would also really like to come but we are worried about age being a problem.

$75 to attend the con + hotel + food + dc shirt money, etc...

your 15 and your parents are going to let you go to Vegas alone to hang out with a buncha blue haired hackers!? if thats what your looking for maybe BW would volunteer to be your guardian :p

as of age requirements i don't think there are any...but don't you have to be 18 to rent a hotel room?
You're either on my side or else you're in the way.

They say that you have to be 18 to rent a hotel room, but with a little bit of work and planning, it is not hard to get around this at all.

forgive me for my noobishness but i don't know who BW is :/ They actuailly haven't said i could go, but i might be able to pull it off, espicially if me and my best friend, who also happens to be into computer security, and shhhh! don't tell them you have blue hair! Could anyone give me the idea of how much a hotel room would cost a night? Oh, and i'm sure i'll stop in in the room sharing forum soon, as i don't really mind sleeping, no scratch that, being overdosed on caffene with a bunch of blue haired geeks :) I've wanted to hit Defcon for a while now, and this year there's a Ottawa Quebeck trip at my school, but i diddn't get on the trip due to bad luck, and the trip is $650 CND, i'm suposed to pay for half, so they might help me out if they decide to let me go to defcon :) The chances look ok, they actuailly haven't said an outright no.

EDIT: After reading around i discovered who BlackWave is, i'd love for him to be my guardian! lol, he sounds great and very intellegent. *cough*please!*cough*

          read the FAQ: http://www.defcon.org/html/defcon-11...n-11-faqs.html

You would want to stay at the AP which depending on the toss of a dime could cost you 120$USD - 140$USD per night BEFORE taxes... sure you could go with some type of online deal... but with defcon the AP explains that they will make sure those who reserved with them will have priority to those who paid less elsewhere, and may even be moved to another hotel.

Well, the board seems to be getting flooded with this, but why not... gives us more reason to smack people down later on for not catching it :)

Basic rooms at the Alexis Park are $120 a night (from current understanding). Also keep in mind, your goin to need to eat.. or at minimum have a steady supply of <insert caffeinated beverage here>. My flight their and back from Maine was $360 last year, and can only imagine it would be around the same cost this year. In all I planned on spending $1000, and that ended up pretty accurate.

Now.. sharing a room with your friend will bring your cost down between the two of you. Either of you trashing the room, or having others into the room that trash it will bring your cost up considerably (as well as piss off the person nice enough to vouch for you getting the room). Spare cash always comes in handy in the vendor area, as tshirts usually go for about $20 each and other nifty things abound. Spare cash to do other things in Vegas is nice... but if you're only going to be there for the 3 days of Defcon, then you won't have a whole lot of time for anything else... (I still don't get all those photo sites where all you see if LV sightseeing and their hotel rooms).

As for age, I think the hotel minimum for getting the room is 18, as said above. Other hotels that have casinos in them have a minimum age of 21. You pretty much have to be 21 to get into any place that has some form of casino, which.. is a lot of damned places. Or so they say... Mr Nulltone would probably have the most knowledge and recon in this area, as to technicalities... I'm sure he would be THRILLED to get tons and tons of PMs about this.... :)
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Yeah what is up with that ? Don't forget the thousands of film wasted on pictures of the desert... none to make the cover of Time magazine anytime soon mind you.

Here is a tip for all you photographers... take more T&A pics, less desert and vegas scenes... you aren't tourists... you are defconners!!

Being a "Defconi" I agree that more T and A shots must be taken to protect national security..... :D

Well it's actuially looking really good for me, i can afford it if i go splits on the hotel room with someone, and hopefully my best friend would be going with me, so that would work! it's just getting there! plane tickets are $753CND, so if i could hook up with a car pool somewhere that would be perfict, I also have to bring enough for Caffene and a little bit of food... i'd like to get there Thursday morning and leave Monday night, i don't plan on doing much sightseeing, just defconing! I might be able to get free plane tickets, and if not i know someone who might drive me down, but it's pushing it....

So, hopefully i'll be able to find a way down there!

I think anyone who is 15 and willing to spend so much time and money at Defcon should get sponsors! Have you heard of hackcanada.com, maybe you can get assist from them.

Personally I see no need for age limits other than legal things, like alcohol and hotel/car rental. Once at the con you can be 10 or 110, if you are cool, then you fit right in.

As for T&A pics I will bring digital this year and not have the same troubles I had last year!

I couldn't agree more. Looking through most of the archives on defconpics.org, I'm utterly dissapointed. It seems like more than half the pictures were of people's hotel rooms, and a whole lot of Nevada desert nothing. At DCX I took about a hundred pics of Vanna, and finally a video of her stripping and getting whipped by Betty. About 12 of my pictures consisted of the drive down, and the rest was the con. A couple of the stolen pic archives contain most of my photos so I must have done something right.

Yes someone needs to make Defconvids.org or something. I was sitting in the front row for the HJ's and have some seriously nice filmage regarding VV and BB getting their groove on ;) and even a nice death threat after sitting someone down who was ruining the show.
