    Re: Shmoocon

[QUOTE=Grifter;91797]Yeah, my first Shmoocon experience left me with very, very little sleep due to the hotel lobby/bar area.

If L0sT and Major Malfunction and Zack (if he's coming) will agree to play Mao again, sleep is going to become a distant memory. (everybody is invited to play Mao)

Btw, Grifter, I never got a chance to congratulate you and spouse on the birth of your child. How is the heir to your domain?

is this the card game that involves quiet or something else? i love that and will be up for it at shmoocon. something else that someone got me into recently is Fluxx. similar in that it's a great game to whip out anytime with just about any sized group. you can play it with kids at a summer camp, with co-workers during an airport layover, or with a bunch of friends amid drugs and cocktails.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Exactly, as a matter of fact, most of the people who play Mao started out playing Fluxx.

The name of the game is "The unOfficial, Cambridge, 5-card Mao. And the only rule I can tell you is this one".

I assume you mean this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRE_voting_machine and not this http://www.webmd.com/colorectal-canc...xamination-dre.

I don't want 1/2 of the latter, or a whole one either. :-)

speaking of swag for giveaways and things that you are sure to want... maybe i'll tip my hand a bit and reveal something that i made in a very limited run. these won't be for sale, but reserved as prizes for winners in the lockpick game and other people who are super special to me.

start thinking now about how to get on that velvet rope uber-leet list.

Yep. The mail server is still unavailable to the forums. DT knows about it.

It appears when a page is loaded, as an extra method to send pending email to users about threads they have subscribed to, or password resets, or more commonly new accounts.

Once there is a new mail server that the forums can reach, that message should go away.

How much volume are we talking mail server wise? Are we talking multiple accounts or just a single account for e-mail notification of a post to a tagged message? I would gladly lend the services of my current mail server to route mail for you guys for these forums until a time when you are able to get your mail server up and running. I could go as high as about 4000 users more if I cluster.

Let me know, it's only mail.

Yeah. It is complicated. I've considered using one of my own servers for this too. Unfortunately, it isn't that simple. There are network restrictions that would need to be worked out. I considered building a tunnel to make this work too, but then I decided it wouldn't be worth the maintenance to keep it working. So, I'll just keep dealing with the email stuff in a manual fashion. Password resets and email confirmations are all being done on the defconforums@gmail.com address.

(I'll harvest our side-discussion over to /dev/random later, so shmoocon discussion doesn't become confusing. :-)
